Nothing in the book yet. All four members are tied on zero, and all four are quietly certain they are going to win.

Every man partners with every other man exactly once. Win the hole and you and your partner each bank a point. Halve it and you split. Top of the Rock is only nine holes, so its holes count double and every partnership is worth the same eighteen points. Three rounds, fifty-four points, and one member drives home in silence.

Depart Dallas

American 4311. One hour and fifty minutes of layover, which is exactly enough time for somebody to have four beers and swear he is fine.

DFW → SGF · arrives 6:19 pm CT
Land in Springfield

Grab the car. It is about seventy-five minutes south, most of it dark and full of deer.

Check in, Payne's Valley Cottages

Big Cedar Lodge. Check-in opens at four, we will be nowhere near there at four.

Sunday, September 27

Shuttle to Cliffhangers

Be outside the cottage with your clubs, not still looking for your other shoe.

One hour before the tee time
Cliffhangers — Round 1

Eighteen par threes hanging off the side of a bluff. Dave and Shannon against Joe and Kelly. Bring more balls than you think you need, then bring more than that.

18 holes · par 54 · 18 points
Top of the Rock — Round 2

Nine par threes, a Nicklaus card, and a sunset over Table Rock Lake that you are all going to take the same bad photo of. Dave and Joe against Kelly and Shannon.

9 holes · par 27 · 1,420 yards · 18 points, holes count double

Monday, September 28

Shuttle to Payne's Valley

Seventy minutes before the tee time. It is the big one, so nobody gets left behind arguing about coffee.

Outside the cottage
Payne's Valley — Round 3

The main event. Tiger built it, Golf Digest gave it best new public course in America, and it is going to take five hours minimum. Dave and Kelly against Joe and Shannon. Everything is still on the table here.

18 holes · par 72 · 18 points · plus the 19th
The 19th — The Big Rock

Par three at the bottom of a limestone canyon with a waterfall behind the green. Closest to the pin, no points, loser buys. An ace reportedly gets you a grand at Bass Pro, which none of you will ever have to worry about.

Check out

Cottage vacated. Evidence removed. Somebody's putter stays in the room.

The wager Three rounds, three different partners, eighteen points a round. A hole won is a point in your pocket and a point in your partner's, and at Top of the Rock it is two, because nine holes should not count for half as much as eighteen. A hole halved is half each. Whoever finishes with the most points is the champion and gets to be insufferable about it until roughly Thanksgiving.
Three rounds, three partners

Bass Pro's owner pointed at a cliff and said put greens on it. Short, stupid, spectacular. The scorecard says par three eighteen times, which is not the same as saying easy.

Design
Jack Nicklaus

The only par three course to ever host a PGA Tour sanctioned event. Late tee time, low sun, water everywhere. Nine holes to either save your Sunday or bury it.

Design
Tiger Woods, TGR

Tiger's first public design in America and named best new public course the year it opened. Wide off the tee, brutal around the greens, and then a bonus par three in a canyon just to make sure the day ends with somebody upset.

Club Bylaws

Adopted unanimously, disputed constantly
  1. The first man to mention his handicap carries the cooler for the remainder of the round.
  2. Any ball hit into the waterfall on the 19th is deemed a hole in one, retroactively, by unanimous consent, and nobody has to talk about it again.
  3. One mulligan is permitted per round, and only if you announce loudly that you do not normally take one.
  4. Scores entered after 9 pm are subject to review by the Committee. The Committee is whoever is still awake.
  5. Any man who says "I was hitting it great on the range" forfeits his right to complain for two holes.
  6. Photos are encouraged especially if you are taking a photo or video of somebody else's misery.
  7. Transfusions are not a performance enhancing substance and will not be treated as such by the Committee.
  8. What happens in the cottage, stays in the cottage.
